This post is about a shark encounter in La Jolla, California. I was scuba diving with my brother at La Jolla Shores in San Diego. We were underwater on SeaDoo scooters like the Navy Seals. We ended up with a little distance between us when going through some kelp beds and became separated. While looking for him, I saw this shark off in the distance. I had my GoPro mounted on my face mask so I knew I was going to get some good video. This is only the second shark encounter I had seen at the time.
Luckily My Gear Was On Point
I went towards the shark and cut the motor hoping not to scare it away. You can hear the silence in between my breathes in the video. I had a clear shot of the shark as it crossed right in front of me. It’s not so impressive to people that have seen tons of shark underwater but it was new to me. Scuba divers that have traveled internationally and dive all around the world have seen tons of sharks. Local divers in San Diego or California don’t always run into sharks. It took me three years of diving before I ran into my first shark.
I’m A Horrible Brother
Seeing this shark in La Jolla shores was pretty awesome. I was grateful my GoPro was positioned right and actually on. What I really wanted to do was go to the right of the shark as it was going left and kind of run it towards my brother. I was hoping to catch my brother’s reaction seeing the shark for the first time on my GoPro. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. The shark swam off in a different direction.
Since I didn’t find my brother in a timely fashion after being separated under water, I surfaced. He did the same. I asked him if he saw the shark and he said no. He didn’t believe there was one. He was both surprised and disappointed when he saw this video later that night.
